Sunday of the Righteous & Just January
31st, 2010

أحد الأبرار والصدّيقين
31 كانون الثاني سنة 2010

Gospel: Matthew 25: 31 – 46

Readings: Hebrews 12L 18 – 24

This Gospel reading concludes the teachings of Jesus according to St. Matthew. Jesus confirms that the least ones are his brothers. He is one of them. This Gospel reading is the conclusion of Jesus’ answer to the disciples’ question about the final judgment.

The final day is the day we recognize the Son of Man instead of meeting him which takes place on earth. Whoever wants to know the Lord has to serve others with simplicity, love and without any expectations.

The Lord incarnate will recognize his own people who live in love. In a time where people battle and quarrel about the truth concerning God and his divinity, this Gospel comes to return humanity to all human beings.

Matthew’s Gospel confirms that human beings are the best to know God. The judgment makes all humans equal no matter to what religious denomination they belong: “Did you love and serve like you are serving God?” All humanity is directed to Jesus the Messiah.

By loving our brothers we love Jesus. Yes, at the end of our lives we will be judged according to the love we lived.

Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, February 2

Forty days after his birth, Jesus was presented in the temple by Mary and Joseph to fulfill Jewish law. There he was recognized by Simeon and Anna, who were waiting for the coming Messiah.

St. Luke reports the event: “When the day came to purify them according to the Law of Moses, the couple brought Jesus up to Jerusalem so that he could be presented to the Lord, for it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every first-born male shall be consecrated to the Lord.”

They came to offer in sacrifice “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons, in accord with the dictate in the Law of the Lord.”

This Feast, celebrated by the Christian Churches of East and West at an early date, has also been called “Candlemas Day” because candles are blessed and lighted this day on which Simeon called Jesus “a light to the gentiles.

“Now Master, you can dismiss your servant in peace;
you have fulfilled your word.

For my eyes have witnessed your saving deed displayed for all the people to see;

A revealing light to the gentiles, the glory of your people Israel.
