Second Sunday after the Epiphany, St. Anthony’s Feast
January 17th, 2010
الأحد الثاني بعد الدّنح، عيد مار أنطونيوس الكبير.
17 كانون الثاني سنة 2010

Gospel: Mark 10: 28 – 31

Readings: Ephesians 6: 10 – 18

On the feast of St Anthony the father of monastic life, and the first hermit, the Church chose the Gospel of St. Mark. In this Gospel Jesus exceeds the meaning of earthly possessions.

He declares a definite rejection of any attachment to anything material in order to reach eternal life. We notice that the negative attitude towards Jesus from the rich man was the result of the distribution of riches to the poor.

Jesus didn’t impose that rule on everyone, only those who really want to be free of all earthly attachment. St. Anthony left everything to follow Jesus once he heard the words of the Gospel.

He gave away all his money to the poor and followed the Lord. St. Mark points out that the disciples left their families and all their earthly possessions to become disciples to the kingdom. When Jesus’ disciple left everything, he didn’t live in emptiness.

Instead he now belongs to another community which was chosen for him by Jesus himself. Jesus started his mission by inviting the disciples whom he loved and asked them to be his friends. Everything begins with a personal relationship with Jesus, the Lord.

Prayer for Haiti…

Heavenly Father, it is with a heavy heart that we come to you, not necessarily knowing what we should ask for because man of us are wondering, “Why did this happen? Why has tragedy struck Haiti again and why do so many lives have to be lost again?”

We will humble ourselves before you to ask for your mercy to be upon Haiti and its people. Extend your hand upon the land and restore all that has been lost, destroyed and damaged to be better than it was before. As rescue teams search for casualties, give them foresight. May they be led by your wisdom, and encouraged by your strength and advised by your discernment.

There are yet people who are surviving and we pray that the rescue workers would find them in time and revive them. May every prayer regarding this tragedy be heard and responded to in your good time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer for Christian Unity.

O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, our only Saviour, the Prince of Peace;

Give us grace to lay to heart the great dangers we are in by our unhappy divisions. Take away all hatred and prejudice, and whatsoever else may hinder us from godly union and concord:

That as there is but one Body and one Spirit, and one hope of our calling, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism, one God and Father or us all, so we may be all one heart and of one soul, united in one holy bond of truth and peace, of faith and charity, and may with one mind and one mouth glorify you; through Jesus our Lord. Amen.
